Sophia Monroe was juggling groceries, her toddler’s hand, and a day that had already gone sideways. The small-town single mom had just picked up her son, Liam, from daycare when a rogue carton of milk slipped from her paper bag, bursting dramatically across the sidewalk. “Of course,” she muttered under her breath, stooping to collect the mess.

“Need a hand?” The voice, deep and smooth as silk, startled her. Sophia glanced up to find a man crouching beside her. He was ruggedly handsome, with sharp cheekbones and a five o’clock shadow. His piercing green eyes seemed to see right through her.

“I’ve got it, thanks,” she said stiffly, tugging Liam closer. This was Pine Valley, a sleepy town where everyone knew everyone—except this stranger.

“I insist.” He reached for the dripping carton, his leather jacket creaking as he moved. “Name’s Logan, by the way.”

“Thanks… Logan,” she said warily, balancing her son on her hip. Something about him set her on edge. He had an easy confidence, but the faint scar cutting through his eyebrow told a different story.

She watched as he efficiently cleaned up the spill, flashing her a grin that was annoyingly charming.

“Let me replace that milk,” he offered.

Sophia hesitated. “Really, it’s fine.”

“Think of it as my good deed for the day.”

Against her better judgment, Sophia found herself at the grocery store again, with Logan trailing behind. Liam giggled at the way Logan made faces at him, and despite her instincts, she couldn’t help but smile.

“So, what brings you to Pine Valley?” she asked, trying to sound casual.

“Passing through,” Logan replied cryptically, his tone light but evasive.

Sophia raised an eyebrow. Pine Valley wasn’t exactly a tourist hotspot.

Later that evening, as she tucked Liam into bed, Sophia’s thoughts lingered on Logan. He was charming, yes, but something didn’t add up. Why did a drifter in a leather jacket feel the need to help a stranger?

The next day, her suspicions were confirmed. Pine Valley’s local news lit up with a shocking report: Logan Reid, escaped convict, suspected of robbery, last seen in the area. Sophia’s stomach dropped. The man who had helped her, who had made her son laugh, was a wanted criminal.

As fate would have it, Logan showed up at her door that night. “I need to explain,” he said, his eyes pleading.

Sophia should have slammed the door. Instead, she let him in.

“It’s not what you think,” he began. “I was framed. The real criminals are out there, and they’ll stop at nothing to keep me quiet.”

Her rational mind screamed at her to call the police, but a deeper instinct told her to listen. Logan’s sincerity was disarming. Against every ounce of logic, she believed him.

From that moment, Sophia’s quiet life spiraled into chaos. She found herself dodging police, protecting Logan, and uncovering a conspiracy that stretched further than she could have imagined.

In the midst of it all, she discovered a truth about herself: she was braver, stronger, and far more willing to take risks than she ever knew.
