Just when you thought you’d seen every kind of musical mashup, along come Chris Rodrigues and The Spoon Lady—and they’re blowing minds with a porchside performance that’s taken the internet by storm. Their version of Angels in Heaven, a song penned by Rodrigues himself, has racked up over 60 million views—and for good reason.
Chris Rodrigues, born in Asheville, NC, on June 7, 1989, had a rough start after his dad walked out when he was five. To help his mom, he took on odd jobs and eventually turned to busking. A self-taught guitarist since toddlerhood, Chris dabbled in everything from bluegrass to metal before hitting the streets in 2012.
A year later, fate stepped in—literally—when Abby Roach, better known as The Spoon Lady, mistakenly ended up in Asheville after hopping the wrong train. A street performer and free speech activist, Abby had roamed the U.S. by freight train, busking to survive. The unexpected detour led to a musical match made in heaven.
In 2017, the pair dropped a joint album Working on Wall Street, though Chris also has solo work, including his 2016 release I’ll Keep My Light Lit. Meanwhile, Abby’s more than just a musical marvel. A former radio personality, she champions street art through the Asheville Buskers Collective and documents local performers with her project Busker Broadcast.
But it’s their stripped-down, soul-shaking porch performance that has truly captivated fans. No studio tricks, no flashy edits—just raw, real talent. As one viewer put it: “This is how music should be. Pure. Raw. Talent.”
And honestly? We couldn’t agree more.
