81-year-old Dave Williams surprised everyone by singing a pitch-perfect rendition of The Righteous Brothersâ âUnchained Melodyâ at a nursing home. When he took the microphone at the nursing home, no one anticipated much. The audience exchanged a few giggles, bracing themselves for a wobbly, off-key performance. But then he started singing. The crowd fell still as his voiceâclear, forceful, and perfectly in tuneâpoured forth the first notes of âUnchained Melody.â For a few wonderful moments, time seemed to pause, and no one could believe what they were hearing. The subsequent applause was enormous, as everyone realized they had watched something exceptional.
Guests at Liverpoolâs Park View Nursing Home were enjoying some wonderful singing by local soprano Toni Nesbitt when Dave Williams requested a performance. Dave has served 50 years as a medical assistant for the United Kingdomâs National Health Service.
The vocal powers of a man who had previously performed with The Beatles astounded everyone in attendance. âWhen I got up, my daughter was begging me to sit back down,â Dave said. âBut Iâm glad I didnât!â
He found it tremendously fulfilling when a dementia sufferer began singing the song to herself following his performance. âSomeone in the audience was a patient with dementiaâand after my performance, I saw her singing the song to herself, which was brilliant.â
Dave used to be in a band named The Dices, and in 1958, they performed with Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. At 17, Dave went solo and sang for ÂŁ3 each night at a tiny club on weekends.
A genuinely magnificent event for him was when he sang with The Beatles at Knotty Ash Village Hall in Liverpool in 1961, at the request of a friend. Another memorable occasion in his life was performing in front of a large crowd, including Mel C, at Paul McCartneyâs 58th birthday party in 2000 at the Linda McCartney Center.
He recounts the experience, adding, âIt was all surreal and something I will never forget.â The gig at Knotty Ash was a little weird. I may have been off-key, but I received a good applause! People from all around the world gathered to celebrate Paulâs birthday.
A nursing home staffer posted a video of Daveâs performance on social media, saying, âWords canât explain how we all felt after his performanceâand he has said he would love to perform for us again.â
The Park View TikTok profile published the video, which garnered 500,000 views and numerous positive comments from users. Dave was taken aback when he earned a standing ovation at his favorite neighborhood business the next day after people saw his performance.
