18-year-old DJ Johnson, the daughter of a worship leader, had the opportunity of a lifetime to sing on American Idol, and she drove the judges to tears with a performance of her song “Scars.”
DJ Johnson is the sixth child in a family of ten, and she told the judges and audiences around the country about how her mother abandoned them only a year ago.
She played her song, “Scars,” which she penned to describe the anguish she has experienced since her mother abandoned their family.
DJ’s passion for music has always been strong, and she was obviously distressed when she spoke about how her mother had belittled her over it.
DJ sang and played the piano in the American Idol studio, but her emotions overpowered her, and she stopped midway through the song. The judges intervened to calm her down; Lionel gave her a handkerchief and had her father embrace her before she concluded her audition.
When Luke asked if she wanted to perform another song, Katy Perry explained that DJ Johnson needed to finish the song, so she composed herself and started singing “Scars.”
Katy Perry was spotted sobbing while DJ Johnson sang, and the judges praised her for adding, “Some of the greatest artists become artists because they have had the most pain in their life,” Katy said to DJ while wiping her own tears. “Whether you can transform that grief into a purpose.” Keep being brave.”
The young woman received a “yes” from all three judges and moved on to the next stage of the competition.
